THE SOLITAIRE DIAMOND RING

The classic solitaire diamond ring remains the most popular style for engagement proposals.

Typically featuring a centre diamond or coloured gemstone mounted within a four or six prong claw setting, it is combined with a plain precious metal mount such that the ring maintains it's beauty over years of regular wear.

The centre stone can be round brilliant cut, princess ("square") cut, cushion, emerald, baguette, marquise, pear or even heart shaped.

In the case of all solitaire rings it is the centre stone which gets all the attention.

The process of buying an engagement ring from Pobjoy Diamonds remotely was made very comfortable and we are both delighted with the result.

MORE ABOUT DIAMONDS

FLUORESCENCE, SYMMETRY & POLISH

Fluorescence provides a quantitative measure of the "whiteness" of the diamond such that in general a diamond with zero or very faint fluorescence is preferred. Diamonds may also exhibit varying degrees of 'milkiness' or very slight brown or green colouration. These are more advanced grading filters but nevertheless have an influence on the diamond's value.

The symmetry refers to the balance and alignment of the stone once cut and attests to it's brilliance and scinitillation in terms of the light entering and reflecting from the diamond.

The polish refers to the finish of each facet of the diamond such that an absence of tiny scratches or burns will result in an 'excellent' grading.

TABLE & DEPTH

The ratio between table and depth of the diamond informs the brilliance of the sparkle. For example with a round brilliant cut diamond a table which is too narrow with shallow depth will not reflect the light entering the stone as majestically as a better proportioned version.

COLOUR VERSUS CLARITY

The issue of colour versus clarity is really a matter of opinion and to some degree budget. Our view in general is to opt for a higher colour grade over a higher clarity grade. With a solitaire diamond of around one carat weight or less it is extremely difficult to see any inclusions with the naked eye at a grade of Si1 or above. It is true that this is also influenced by the nature of - and position in the diamond - these inclusions and marks are located. However the colour - including any fluorescnce, tint or milkiness - is more visible to the naked eye, especially under bright lights.

As the carat weight of the diamond increases, some inclusions and blemishes can, if unfortunately positioned within the face up aspect of the diamond, become very slightly noticeable albeit under a very keen eye. Nevertheless we are still inclined to focus on the colour as a priority, subject to the specific diamond chosen being free of visible inclusions ("eye-clean"). We also place significance upon the cut, table and depth ratios as these determine the "sparkle" of the diamond.

We therefore suggest opting for a carefully selected GIA certified colour grade of between D and G/H and a clarity grade of between VVS1 and Si1.

The overall appearance and qualities of each diamond are very much a sum of all the variables and each diamond therefore is as unique as one's fingerprint. When it comes to selecting your diamond we are able to filter through multiple variables in arriving at the ideal stone for you in the context of budget, shape and carat size.

RESPONSIBLE SOURCING

We do not buy rough nor polished diamonds unless they are from a recognised exchange or a third party source that conforms with the policies laid out by the Kimberley Process. Before choosing your diamond ring you may specify the country of origin and be rest assured that our diamonds are conflict free.

My diamond solitaire ring is absolutely wonderful, I love the setting and the way it sparkles when it catches the light! Quality and perfection. Thank you to all at Pobjoy Diamonds, I will certainly be back!

PRECIOUS METALS

YELLOW GOLD

Although white gold and platinum have grown in popularity, yellow gold is both classic and highly desirable for it's rich and luxurious feel and appearance. The colour of yellow gold provides a beautiful juxtaposition to the solitaire diamond and is sure to never go out of style. Our gold ring mounts are in 18K gold which we recommend due to it's ability to withstand regular wear over many years and can be repolished as required.

WHITE GOLD, PLATINUM & PALLADIUM

White gold has a certain look and feel which keeps it in demand and has a highly polished finish. Platinum and palladium also appear white but are more resilient to knocks and general wear and tear than gold, while both metals are also hypoallergenic. Platinum weighs more than gold while palladium weighs less. White gold will loose some of it's colour properties over time and should ideally be refinished every two to three years.

ROSE GOLD

Occasionally known as red gold, rose gold exudes warmth and character. It is extremely adaptable to all tones of skin and has become an increasingly popular choice in recent years. It is a particularly attractive colour and works extremely well when combined with a sparkling solitaire diamond. 18K rose gold is typically made up of 75% natural gold with 25% copper and other alloys, the more copper the "redder" the appearance.

Quick View

CAN I SEE SAMPLE RINGS FIRST?

Yes. We have created meticulous replica models of most of the customisable diamond engagement rings in our collections to try before you commit. Should you decide not to proceed you have nothing to lose.

Each ring looks just like the real thing and is beautifully made from polished silver or brass and set with cubic zirconia 'stones' to replicate the size and shape of the real item.

We can also arrange to show you individual diamonds to your requirements at our visitors suite by arrangement.

HOW DO I CHECK MY PARTNER'S CORRECT SIZE?

Many of our customers plan on making the engagement proposal a surprise. The challenge quite often is in establishing your partner's correct ring size without raising suspicion.

Our sizing guide and ring conversion table is designed to help.

Of course if the surprise element is not an issue you can always arrange to visit us with your partner to get the correct size first.

If you cannot think of a convincing excuse to measure your partner's ring finger you may use an existing ring to gauge this. Remember that it must be a ring that already fits comfortably and is worn on the wedding ring finger, traditionally next to the "little finger" on the left hand.

Please note that a solitaire diamond ring tends to have a relatively narrow band such that if comparing to an existing ring with a wide gauge the correct ring size to go for will be half a size smaller.

WHAT IF I GET THE WRONG SIZE?

Don't worry - we have it covered! Our service includes a re-sizing of your ring with our compliments if it doesn't fit exactly as it should do.

Baguette, emerald, large round brilliant cut, pear and heart shaped diamond solitaire rings can be made to order. You may wish to add a contrasting diamond flank to each shoulder or other unique details. We have dozens of different mount designs which can be adapted and set with the diamonds or coloured gemstones of your preference and sized to fit.

We can also source larger sized or unusually coloured diamonds. Your ring will be as bespoke as you want it to be.

We will work with you to create initial sketches and then CAD CAM designs to consider and provide clear pricing before you reach a decision. While we will not copy somebody elses design you are welcome to reference other rings you may have seen to provide inspiration in the creative process.

We will provide you with an extensive choice of coloured gemstones and GIA certified white or coloured diamond weights, shapes and grades to choose from. Your bespoke ring will be exactly what you want it to be and made to last for generations.
